London Dreams - Of friendship and music

images[84]_401236946181210_1.jpg
Cast: Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, Asin Thottumkal, Om Puri, Brinda Parekh, Rannvijay Singh, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Manoj Pahwa

Director: Vipul Shah

Music Director: Shankar Ehsaan Loy

'London Dreams' weaves a musical drama around the eternal plot of jealousy and love involving two friends against the backdrop of music, rock bands and concerts. The film is said to be inspired from Milos Forman's 'Amadeus' (1984), which was based on Salieri and Mozart's life. As you can understand from the storyline, the film has tremendous scope for taking the viewer on an emotional roller-coaster ride, which the director Vipul Shah utilizes to the full. As it is, exploring different shades of human emotions has always been his forte, and friendship is a theme with many nuances.

The first half of 'London Dreams' is a bit stretched and serves more as a build-up to the more gripping second half in which the real drama unfurls. It is evident that in a story of clashing interests the characters of the two friends in most cases are contrasted to each other. Arjun (Ajay Devgn) is inclined towards music while his childhood friend Mannu, has it running in his blood. Arjun manages to form a band in London (though his struggle has not been depicted very convincingly) with Zoheb (Rannvijay Singh) and Wasim, two brothers from Paskistan. Priya (Asin) becomes a dancer in this group and also makes her place in Arjun's heart. When Arjun brings Mannu to join his band, things begin to take such a turn that their friendship is put at stake.

The drama begins its journey towards the climax from this point but the climax is a bit rushed really. Both Ajay Devgn (numerology had the better of him) and Salman Khan give strong performances and their roles are backed by their natural strengths. Easy and innocent charm for Salman Khan and intensity for Ajay Devgn. Asin looks good where she is meant to look good and puts in a balanced performance. Om Puri and Aditya Roy Kapoor are good in their short roles but Rannvijay does not have much to do.

The music of 'London Dreams' has been met with mixed reviews considering that it is a film in which music plays a major role. Understandably, there is an overdose of songs. Background score is fitting and good.

Just one last thought. Does anybody else think that both Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn are looking somewhat aged as rock stars? Or am I loosing it totally? Whatever.
